Once upon a time, a kind old man lived near a deep green forest. He was a bamboo cutter who spent his days making sturdy baskets and mats from the long stalks. One afternoon, he noticed one particular bamboo plant that was glowing with a soft, golden light. He rubbed his eyes because he had never seen anything so magical in all his years. Slowly, he stepped closer to see why the plant was shimmering like a fallen star. With a gentle touch, he cut the stalk open and gasped with wonder.
Inside the glowing bamboo sat a tiny, beautiful baby girl no bigger than his thumb. She wore a dress made of light and smiled up at him with eyes as bright as the morning sun. The old man’s heart filled with a warmth he had never felt before. He carefully tucked her into the pocket of his soft robe to keep her safe and warm. He knew right away that this little girl was a special gift from the heavens. He hurried home as fast as his old legs could carry him to show his wife.
When he reached their small cottage, the old man called out for his wife, the Grandmother. She looked into his pocket and her face lit up with a giant, joyful smile. Kaguya-hime spent much of her time doing small, wonderful things for her neighbors. Because of her, the whole village began to feel like one big, happy family. People realized that being kind made them feel much better than being grumpy ever did.
Word of the Radiant Princess spread far and wide until many wealthy suitors came to visit. These men were very rich and wore fancy clothes made of the finest silk. They all wanted Kaguya-hime to marry them because they thought her beauty would make them famous. They stood outside her house and boasted about their gold coins and their big, stone castles. Kaguya-hime listened politely, but she did not care about gold or fancy titles at all. She only wanted to stay with her family and continue her life of simple kindness.
One by one, the wealthy men brought her extravagant gifts to try and win her heart. One man brought a box of sparkling diamonds, and another brought a crown made of heavy, solid gold. Kaguya-hime looked at the jewels and then looked at a small, wild daisy growing in the dirt. She told the men that a flower's bloom was more precious to her than any cold, hard stone. The suitors were very confused because they thought everyone loved shiny things the most. She explained that true value comes from things that grow and bring life to the world.
To help the suitors understand what was truly important, Kaguya-hime gave them funny little riddles to solve. She asked one man to find a stone that never gets wet, even when it is dropped in a deep, blue lake. She asked another to find a robe that would never burn, even if it sat in the middle of a roaring fire. These were not dangerous quests, but they were clever puzzles that required a lot of thinking. The men set off on their journeys, feeling very determined to find these magical items. Kaguya-hime hoped that while they searched, they might learn something about the world around them.
Months later, the suitors returned with objects they had found, but they were all very silly mistakes. One man realized that only a stone of 'kindness' stays dry because it lives safely in the heart. Another man realized that a 'warm smile' never burns out and lasts longer than any fabric. They weren't angry that they didn't win her hand; instead, they felt wiser and more sincere. They thanked Kaguya-hime for teaching them that the best things in life cannot be bought with money. They went back to their homes and started using their wealth to help people instead of just showing off.
As the summer moon grew round and full, Kaguya-hime began to look up at the sky with sad, misty eyes. The Bamboo Cutter and the Grandmother noticed her quiet sighs and felt a little worried. They sat with her on the porch and held her hands while the crickets chirped in the garden. Finally, she looked at them and told them a secret she had kept in her heart for a long time. She explained that she was not from this world, but from the Great Moon Kingdom high above. Her time on Earth was almost finished, and her Moon family was coming to bring her home soon.
'Do not be sad, my dear parents,' Kaguya-hime said as she wiped away a stray tear. She told them that the Moon was a place of endless peace and gentle, silvery light. She had been sent to Earth to learn about the warmth of human love and the beauty of nature. Now that she had learned these lessons, she had to go back to share them with the Moon People. She promised that she would never forget the taste of the sweet bread or the smell of the pine trees. Her heart would always belong to the family who had raised her with such deep care.
When the village heard that Kaguya-hime was leaving, they did not hide away in sadness. Instead, they decided to throw the most beautiful farewell party the world had ever seen. Everyone gathered together to build hundreds of colorful paper lanterns that glowed like little oranges. They hung them from the trees and floated them on the quiet river that ran through the valley. They wanted the path to the Moon to be filled with light so Kaguya-hime would know she was loved. The whole forest seemed to glow with the collective kindness of the people she had helped.
On the night of the fullest moon, a carriage made of pure starlight descended slowly from the clouds. The Moon People who stepped out were not scary at all; they were gentle beings with long, flowing robes. They smiled at the Bamboo Cutter and the Grandmother and thanked them for being such wonderful parents. They spoke with voices that sounded like soft bells ringing in a gentle summer breeze. The villagers watched in awe as the silvery light of the Moon People mixed with the golden light of their lanterns. It was a moment of pure magic that no one would ever forget.
Before she stepped into the carriage, Kaguya-hime gave her parents a small, wooden box. Inside were tiny seeds that she told them to plant all throughout the village and the forest. 'These are seeds of kindness,' she whispered with a warm hug. 'Whenever you feel lonely, look at the plants that grow, and remember the love we shared.' She hugged the Bamboo Cutter and the Grandmother one last time, promising to watch over them every single night. With a final wave, she stepped into the starlight carriage and began her journey back to the sky.
The carriage rose higher and higher until it looked like just another bright star in the vast, dark sky. The village did not stay sad for long because the seeds Kaguya-hime left behind grew into beautiful, glowing flowers. These flowers reminded everyone to be kind to one another, and the village became the happiest place on Earth. Every time the moon is full and bright, the Bamboo Cutter and Grandmother look up and wave. They can see a special, radiant shimmer coming from the moon, and they know it is Kaguya-hime smiling back at them. Her light continues to guide them, making their world a little brighter every day.
