The moon peeked through the bedroom curtains, casting a soft glow across Lotte’s bed. Lotte hugged Herr Hoppel, her stuffed rabbit with the floppy ears, tight against her chest. Tomorrow was her very first day of big school, and tiny fluttery worries buzzed in her mind. “What if the classroom is too noisy, or the big children are scary?” she whispered into Herr Hoppel’s plush ear. In the corner stood her shiny surprise cone, tied with a bright yellow ribbon. It stood tall and quiet in the shadows, holding wonderful mysteries.

At the breakfast table, Lotte’s tummy felt full of fluttering butterflies. Her mother poured warm milk while her father gently set the colourful school cone beside her chair. It was wrapped tightly with crinkly paper and a silky bow, waiting patiently for the afternoon. “Remember, sweetie, the surprise cone stays sealed until school is over,” her mother said with a warm smile. Lotte touched the shiny paper with one finger and wondered what treasures hid inside. Could there be magic markers, sweet treats, or maybe a tiny notebook waiting beneath the ribbon?

The morning sun shone bright as Lotte walked down the sidewalk with her parents. Her colourful surprise cone was almost as tall as she was, and her arms grew tired from holding it so carefully. Suddenly, she saw Emil, her neighbor from next door, walking with his mother. Emil was clutching a bright blue cone with both hands, looking down at his shiny new shoes. His shoulders were slightly hunched, and he looked just as nervous as Lotte felt inside. Lotte gave him a small, friendly wave from across the pavement.

The schoolyard was filled with cheerful chatter, laughter, and a sea of bright surprise cones. So many tall boys and girls were running across the painted playground games. Lotte stepped closer to Emil, whose eyes were wide with wonder and worry. “Are you nervous too?” Lotte asked softly over the buzzing playground noise. Emil nodded quickly and whispered, “A little bit.” Lotte smiled and reached out her hand to bump his elbow gently. “Let’s be brave together,” she said, and suddenly the big schoolyard did not feel quite so giant anymore.

The classroom smelled of fresh cedar wood, sweet chalk, and new paper. Their kind teacher, Frau Berg, stood by the open doorway and warmly greeted each child by their first name. Lotte was delighted to find a wooden desk with her name tag right next to Emil’s desk. All around the back wall, the children lined up their colourful surprise cones in a row. Leaning against the wooden shelves, the cones looked like a giant, shimmering rainbow. Lotte sat down proudly, realizing her fluttery tummy had completely quieted down.

Frau Berg smiled warmly at the class and picked up a piece of bright yellow chalk. She turned to the blackboard and drew a tall straight line with a short little boot at the bottom. “Who knows this friendly letter?” Frau Berg asked cheerfully. Lotte’s eyes widened with pure excitement, and she raised her hand right up into the air. “That is an L, just like in my name, Lotte!” she announced proudly. Lotte smiled happily to herself, realizing that school was already full of things that belonged to her.

When the school bell finally rang, Lotte hurried home to her living room rug. Herr Hoppel sat waiting patiently on the sofa as Lotte untied the glorious golden ribbon on her cone. With a happy gasp, she gently pulled out three sparkling star pencils, a cheerful red notebook, and a tiny brass bell. At the very bottom lay a small bag of crunchy carrot-shaped cookies. “Look, Herr Hoppel, these are specially for you!” Lotte giggled, setting the delicious treats beside her loyal stuffed rabbit. Opening the cone was pure magic.

In the sunny afternoon, Emil called out over the wooden garden fence. He held up a glossy sheet filled with shiny lion and elephant stickers that came from his blue cone. Lotte ran outside carrying one of her brand-new star pencils. “Would you like to trade?” Emil asked with a hopeful grin, leaning across the fence post. Lotte gladly handed him her pencil in exchange for two golden animal stickers. Sharing her special first-day treasures with a good friend felt even better than keeping them all to herself in her room.

At dinner, the kitchen was filled with the delicious scent of warm vegetable soup. Lotte could hardly stop talking as her mother and father listened with wide, happy smiles. She told them all about Frau Berg, sitting beside Emil, and writing the big letter L on the chalkboard. In the corner of the dining room, her empty surprise cone stood upside down on the wooden sideboard. Lotte had placed it gently over Herr Hoppel’s long ears like a pointed wizard hat. Herr Hoppel looked like the wisest rabbit in the entire kingdom.

When bedtime arrived, Lotte climbed under her cozy quilt without a single worry in her mind. Soft silver moonlight streamed through the window, shining directly onto her bedside table. There rested her favorite new drawing of a bright yellow letter L, decorated with two golden lion stickers. Herr Hoppel snuggled close against her shoulder, wearing a contented plush smile in the peaceful bedroom. Lotte closed her heavy eyes, feeling safe, happy, and immensely proud. Tomorrow was school day number two, and she could hardly wait for the sun to rise again.
