East of the Sun, West of the MoonEast of the Sun, West of the Moon – Picture 1

Long ago, in a cottage tucked between tall pine trees, lived a girl named Solveig. One evening, as the snow fell like soft white feathers, a loud knock sounded at the heavy wooden door. Her father opened it to find a Great White Bear, his fur sparkling with frost. The bear spoke with a voice like the low rumble of a distant drum. He was polite and kind, asking if Solveig would come to live in his golden castle. Though she was a little nervous, Solveig felt a strange sense of trust in her heart.

The White Bear promised that if Solveig came with him, her family would never be cold or hungry again. Solveig looked at her brothers and sisters, then back at the majestic creature standing in the moonlight. She knew her family needed help, so she gathered her courage and stepped forward into the snow. The bear knelt down so she could climb onto his broad, soft back. With a gentle roar of thanks, he began to run through the enchanted forest. Solveig held on tight to his thick fur, feeling the cold wind whip past her rosy cheeks.

They traveled over mountains and across frozen rivers that looked like blue glass. Solveig marveled at how the Great White Bear never seemed tired, even as they climbed higher into the clouds. He told her stories of the stars and the ancient songs of the northern lights. Solveig realized that the bear was not a monster, but a noble guardian of the wilderness. Finally, they reached a mountain that opened up to reveal a hidden, glowing palace. Inside, the air smelled of honey and fresh evergreen needles.

Life in the castle was like a wonderful dream for Solveig. Every room was filled with soft pillows, golden lanterns, and tables of delicious food. The bear was a wonderful host, and they spent their days playing games or reading old books. Even though she missed her family, she was happy to see her friend every day. She felt safe within the stone walls, and she spent many hours exploring the magical gardens. The flowers there grew even in the winter, blooming with colors she had never seen before.

However, there was one mystery in the beautiful castle. Every night, when the lamps were blown out, a kind voice would speak to her in the darkness. She felt the presence of a friend who sat by her bedside, but she was never allowed to see him. The White Bear had told her that she must be patient and trust the magic of the castle. Solveig promised to follow the rules, but her heart was full of curiosity. She wondered who this invisible companion could be and why he stayed in the shadows.

One night, Solveig’s curiosity grew too strong to ignore. She waited until her companion was fast asleep, then she quietly lit a small wax candle. The light revealed a handsome prince with a kind face, sleeping peacefully beside her. Solveig gasped in surprise, realizing that the White Bear was actually a prince under a spell. Suddenly, her hand trembled, and a single drop of hot wax fell onto his shoulder. The prince opened his eyes and looked at her with great sadness because the secret was broken.

The prince explained that he was under an enchantment that could only be broken by patience. Now that he had been seen, he had to go to a castle East of the Sun and West of the Moon. He told Solveig that the castle was hidden far beyond the reach of ordinary travelers. With a flash of silver light, the prince and the beautiful castle vanished into the mist. Solveig found herself standing alone in the snow once again, wearing her old clothes. Instead of crying, she decided she would walk to the ends of the earth to find him.

Solveig walked for many days until she met the East Wind, a cheerful fellow with swirling robes. He was sitting on a cloud, blowing autumn leaves into the air. Solveig told him her story and asked if he knew the way to the secret castle. The East Wind whistled softly and said it was too far for him to fly alone. He offered to carry her to his brother, the West Wind, who might know more. Solveig hopped onto the East Wind’s back, and they soared over the rolling hills together.

The West Wind was stronger than his brother and lived atop a high, rocky peak. He listened to Solveig’s brave quest and was impressed by her loyalty to her friend. He explained that the castle East of the Sun and West of the Moon was a very mysterious place. He agreed to carry her further, flying over the deep blue ocean where whales leaped from the waves. Solveig held on tight, watching the world shrink beneath her as they flew toward the setting sun. They reached the South Wind just as the stars began to twinkle.

The South Wind was warm and gentle, smelling of tropical flowers and sunshine. He felt very sorry for Solveig and the enchanted prince, so he gave her a golden apple for strength. He admitted that he had never reached the hidden castle because it was too far into the cold. However, he knew that his oldest brother, the North Wind, was the only one powerful enough to get there. Solveig thanked him for the gift and prepared herself for the coldest part of her journey. She knew she had to stay brave for her friend.

Finally, Solveig reached the home of the North Wind, who was the oldest and wildest of all the winds. He had a beard of icicles and a voice that sounded like a winter storm. At first, he grumbled that he was too tired to fly such a long distance. Solveig spoke to him with kindness and told him about her long journey from the cottage. The North Wind saw her determination and felt a spark of admiration for the girl. He agreed to take her, warning her that it would be the most difficult flight of her life.

The journey with the North Wind was faster and wilder than any Solveig had ever imagined. They flew so high that the air turned thin and cold, and the ground below was hidden by thick clouds. Solveig tucked her head into her cloak and gripped the North Wind’s icy collar with all her might. The wind roared around them, trying to push them back, but the North Wind pushed forward. He used every bit of his strength to carry the brave girl across the edge of the world. Solveig never let go, her heart filled with hope.

Just as the North Wind’s breath began to fail, they saw a glimmering light on the horizon. It was the castle East of the Sun and West of the Moon, shining like a diamond. The castle sat on a high cliff where the sun and moon seemed to touch the towers at the same time. The North Wind landed gently at the gate and whispered that he could go no further. Solveig thanked him and stepped toward the massive silver doors. She felt a surge of energy, knowing she was finally close to her friend.

Inside the castle, everything was quiet and still, as if the whole world was held in a deep sleep. Solveig wandered through the silver halls until she found the Prince in a room filled with white lilies. He was trapped in a heavy slumber that no noise could wake. Solveig sat beside him and took his hand, whispering stories of their time in the first castle. She told him about her journey and the kindness of the four winds. Her loyalty was a powerful magic that began to melt the icy curse surrounding his heart.

The Prince opened his eyes and smiled, for the sleep curse was finally broken by Solveig’s bravery. The castle began to glow with a warm, golden light, and the cold shadows disappeared forever. The North Wind returned to carry them both back to Solveig’s family cottage in the woods. Her family was overjoyed to see her, and they all lived together in comfort and happiness. Solveig had learned that even the longest journey is possible when you have a brave heart and a true friend. They remained the best of companions, sharing stories of the winds and the stars.
